About Outpost

Outpost Journal is an annual, non-profit print publication on innovative art, design and community action from cities (or cities within cities) that have been traditionally underexposed beyond their local contexts. Each lovingly produced issue of Outpost focuses on illuminating a hyper-local arts ecology via photography, design and creative additions (such as
limited edition screen prints and special inserts) that vary by issue, as well as a guide to where to find the best art in town and where to eat and drink while you’re at it. In each issue, we’ll take you on a journey into the creative heart of a place, exposing the various ways in which unique local communities arise through creative collaboration and production. Where you live shouldn't have to determine whether your work is relevant to an (inter)-national audience. Via features like Secretly Famous, guerrilla engagements with tourist attractions, historical explorations, mapping projects, and deep dives into artist collectives and
organizations, Outpost plans to do its part to expose less widely known creative culture.

Outpost Mentions

"Last year, their inaugural issue explored every nook-and-cranny of Pittsburgh, winning them a ton of critical acclaim and was picked up for distribution in high-end fashion stores like Opening Ceremony, so we're eager to see what's in store for issue two. Based in Baltimore, it will explore the city's unique, creative economy via urban redesign initiatives, artist's homes, the work of non-profit groups, and more. And although the focus is hyper-local, we believe the appeal is unquestionably universal."

“In many smaller cities... creative scenes are thriving. That’s where the new annual non-profit publication, Outpost, comes in.”
— 3rd Ward Blog
"In a post-crash, OWS world, the previous generation’s ideas of success are being reconsidered and reinvented.... A growing number of artists and activists today are taking to heart the 'act local' philosophy and deciding to stay put in or move to smaller cities.... Instead of heading somewhere else to 'make it,' these individuals and groups are producing and activating right where they are—they are 'making it'— whatever their it is— right at home."

“It’s a cracking idea... each issue focuses on the community-based creativity taking place in an otherwise-overlooked city in the USA. There is, it turns out, life beyond Brooklyn and San Francisco.”
— Magtastic Blogsplosion
Selected Press For Mr. Rogers Project:
“It’s a bit warm for sweaters, but last weekend the Mr. Rogers statue along the North Shore suited up in new red cardigan, courtesy of a brand new cultural magazine called Outpost Journal.....The sweater was placed on the commemorative statue of Fred Rogers, near Heinz Field, on Saturday July 16.....The giant red cardigan was crocheted by local crafter Alicia Kachmar, who wrote on her blog that she was “pretty much born” to make a larger-than-life sweater for Mr. Rogers.”
